Who is behind Onyx Stud?
Hi!
My name is Michele. I live in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, with my husband and five kids.

My parents used to breed and show rabbits when i was a little girl.
There was many a weekend when we would be up at dawn, preparing rabbits, making sure they were clean etc. Settling them into their travelling boxes. And then setting off on long journeys for that days show!
It was no surprise then, when i decided that i would like to join in all the fun in my own right, With my own rabbits.

We had many rabbits then.
At one time we had over 200. About 50 of them being mine.

We used to have people visit us just to see all the rabbits!
Maybe you were one of the many visitors...Do you remember a little bungalow in Broxbourne, Herts. Down by the River Lee?

Rabbit shows are often some distance away, so my mother decided to start up a club in Broxbourne.
This was called 'The Broxbourne and District Rabbit Club'.
This was held at 'The Broxbourne Scout Hall', (situated behind the O.S.L. building).
Here was a local club that Rabbit, cavy and small rodent owners could meet to enter and show their pets.
It was great fun which was enjoyed my many people!Unfortunatly, as is the way with many small clubs, it had to close after only a few years.

Rabbit Clubs are non-profit making organisations!
In fact, more often than not, they run at a loss. With Club members and organisers often having to pay out of their own pocket because of lack of funds!

So, if you ever visit a club/show, please buy an extra raffle ticket, or an extra cup of tea, piece of cake.
It all helps towards keeping the clubs going!

MORE ABOUT RABBIT CLUBS AND SHOWS!
People who breed rabbits for exhibition are known as 'Fanciers'.
There is a 'Standard' set for each breed of rabbit.
This has been set by 'The British Rabbit Council'. We each strive to achieve the closest to the Standard through selective breeding.
We Fancier`s then meet up at shows around the country to 'show' our best examples of the ideal rabbit in our chosen breed.

The judge examines each rabbit in turn, making notes of each rabbits good and bad points.
These are based on health and condition, as well as likeness to the standard.
The rabbit with the most good points is then declared the winner!

PRIZES!
If you are lucky, you will be awarded prize cards.
These are awarded for FIRST, SECOND, THIRD and FOURTH (sometimes known as RESERVE).And are awarded to exhibits in each class.

If you have a particuarly good example of your chosen breed, you could be awarded 'Best Of Breed'!

If you are really lucky, and the judge considers your rabbit to be especially good, you can win 'Best In Show'!
This is a grand prize to win! And often comes with a Trophy and Rosettes.

If you would like to visit a show, please Email me with your home town/county and i will inform you of any that are close to you!
